Rules for vegetable gardens 101

  1. FULL SUN

Designing your garden so that the vegetables get a sunny spot, is very important. Fruit and nut trees should be planted on the south side to avoid shading the veggies. You still have a beautiful garden which includes vegetables with a well thought out design. A raised garden, often helps elevate it to the sun and makes maintenance easy, without the bending.

2. SOIL NEEDS TO BE RIGHT

Heavy clay or sandy soils need compost added. This is to lighten the soil, allowing the roots to grow feely and to breath. Nutrient’s, are also very important for producing healthy vegetables. Vegetables and fruit trees are hungry for nutrients. Raised garden beds with just the right soil are great for this reason. This makes all of the nutrients available for your vegetables so they are not competing with other plants and trees.

3. WATERING

Checking moisture levels is important. Also a free draining soil is important to stop waterlogged soils, allowing roots breath. Wicking beds which is a great feature of the Biofilta system, makes this task much easier.

4. SEASONS AND LOCATION

Different vegetable grow at different times of the year. If you are in a sunny spot with good wind protection, this microclimate may allow you to grow things somewhat out of season. Planting zones indicate when you can grow. Green houses allow you to extend the growing season for some crops.

5. GARDENS CAN LOOK GREAT, AND PRODUCTIVE

With good design your balcony, small back yard, expansive property or community garden can include productive plants. Growing plants in a nice setting becomes great entertainment and stress relief. I can’t help but look at my garden every day with a cup of tea in the morning. There is so much more that can be achieved too, with a productive garden! Indoor plants and vertical gardens enhance our environment

Vertical gardens make the people welcome.

At Sydney Olympic Park main offices, Green Look ( https://www.greenlook.com.au/) were contracted to install a vertical garden at the entry. The wall provides a perfect welcoming environment at the foyer. The vertical garden has a lush range of plants and is automatically watered. Green Look provided their custom LED lighting that provides plants with the correct light spectrum for best growth. See https://evolvement.squarespace.com/plantspectrumledlights .

As you move further into the office, you will see that each worker has a number of plants to provide oxygen and improve the feel of the office. With the indoor plants, only 3 species were chosen for their hardiness in low light levels, Sanserveria, Aspidistrus, and Zamloculcas. Staff in the office have added nice features to the plantings like their favourite animals. For the indoor plants we used a 40mm layer of Knauf Urbanscape Green roll beneath each pot, this allows for water storage and a wicking bed to give plants a great start. Green Look will be looking after these plants for quite some time so we will see them grow. Synthetic grass for children's play

GREEN LOOK PLAYGROUND SPECIALISTS

Green Look has recently completed some great playgrounds. We were entrusted to manage the play equipment, softfall base course and the installation of Royal Grass Silk 25. Royal Grass Silk 25 is soft to walk on and is very durable, which makes it great for this application.

Green Square is one of Sydney’s highest growth areas in the city precinct. It is where Green Look has created a wonderful play surface. Here we needed to ensure sub-base was compacted correctly before concrete edging was installed. Interesting play equipment and shade cover were installed. Green Look installed various depths of softfall to meet the 2.1m and 1.2m fall heights required. On this project we used a combination of 22mm and 35mm Proplay. Proplay is manufactured with recycled rubber from car dashboards, how’s that for recycling!. The softfall sheets also presents good drainage and consistent softfall safety qualities. Royal Grass Silk 25 was the play surface. The area is highly used and the grass is tough for this purpose. 2 years on, and it looks brand new! Royal Grass is a premium long lasting surface which is excellent for this application.

Next playground awarded to Green Look was the indoor playspace for a new shopping centre at Kirrawee East gardens. This project has softfall beneath and a nice mound that children love to play on.
